- Keep them close – Goal is not to pick the runner off, but to keep the runner close to the bag
- Time – By keeping the runner close to first, you allow a play to be made on the runner when trying to advance to 2nd base.
- Often times youth baseball players focus on trying to pick the runner off instead of keeping them close and what happens is the pitcher tends to rush making a turn to first base or they try to throw the ball to hard and over throw the first baseman. This leads to the runner advancing to 2nd or even 3rd base and in scoring position. Players should focus on keeping him close to the bag and a chance for a double play or an easy out, preventing him to get into scoring position.
