The point of this drill is create momentum through, and power behind, your outfield throws after making a catch.
Whenever possible, avoid making a catch while standing still. Try to set up a few steps back from where you expect the ball to come down.
As the ball comes down, start your movement toward the spot you’ll be making the catch and “explode” through the ball to maximize the “oomph” behind your throw.
- For fly ball drills, Make sure you toss ball high enough so player can step back from ball flight
- Instill communication – “Me, me, me, It’s mine. I got it.” Call out.
- Start drill at walking speed and step it up to game speed as players get comfortable
